My trilogy of novels takes place in the territory that would one day become Ukraine. In the course of my book research, I’ve become familiar with some of the geography of the country as well as its ancient history, so when reading and watching news reports about the tragic invasion now devastating Ukraine, some of the names of locations affected by the war conjure that history. But, few of the people I’ve spoken to about my books, particularly when I’ve pitched them to agents, have been familiar with this region or its significance to history—ancient or modern. Some of that will likely change now, though for regrettable reasons.
Since every political dimension of the conflict is well covered elsewhere, I thought I might simply post a little of what I know and love about Ukraine—its ancient history. For millennia, the distinctive land that would one day become the modern nation has been at the center of some of history’s most momentous and important developments, and been home to some of its most fascinating and unique cultures.
For the record, my novels are not intended as propaganda for any political cause or movement. They were begun over ten years ago, are set in the 5th c. BCE, and deal with long-forgotten events and peoples of the distant past. I only mention this because it seems like every new work of fiction out there makes a point of taking a stand (i.e. capitalizing) on the big social and political topic of the day, and this is not that.
Anyway, there will be more to follow. Stay tuned.
