Solstice Version (appropriately)
I know I’m not alone in adoring Fleet Foxes in all of its various incarnations throughout the years. The first time I heard them, I was absolutely captivated. With their folkish lyricism and chill-inducing harmonies, they sound at once from another century and another spiritual plane. I didn't think anyone still made music like theirs—weird, archaic, beautiful, meaningful—but I’m grateful they do. This song is not the most representative of their work, but I chose it to accompany this week’s chapter and because the traditional folk ballad, made famous by Joan Baez, has a long and fascinating history of its own. I happen to prefer this version for its plaintive yet pristine vocals, though I tend to prefer men’s voices generally. I once had a male friend tell me he preferred female singers, and I am reminded of the Seinfeld episode when Jerry complained that he couldn't abide being sung to by a man (I think it was Mel Torme?) I wonder if there is something to all that? I digress.
Beautiful song and voice. Thanks for sharing!
